As a Christian in 2020 you have probably felt burdened for your family, our land, and our world. Whether your concerns come from disease, politics, or our children's safety and future, I'm guessing at some point you have bowed your head and asked the Lord for His help as you navigate all of this.
I can guarantee you I don't have the answer, but when I'm needing guidance I always turn to the Bible.
Psalm 119:105 tell us "His word is a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path."
It's easy to look at the day and age we live in and think it's never been worse. That's because maybe we have never experienced worse for ourselves or maybe its because the media is loud these days and we are consuming in every direction. Or maybe it's a Great Awakening of sorts. There are however many horrific stories mentioned in the Bible that give us the confirmation that yes, in fact, sinful nature of men has been around for centuries and it is considered wicked in the eyes of God.
In Genesis 18 God reveals to Abraham His intention to destroy the city of Sodom and Gomorrah and all it's inhabitants for their sins. Sodam and Gomorrah was a wicked city, however Abraham's nephew Lot and his family lived there so Abraham bargained with the Lord. "If there are just 50 righteous men in the city, will you spare it?" God agreed and Abraham continued his bargaining all the way to just 10 righteous people to which God agreed to spare the city. Two angels were then sent into Sodom and Gomorrah and met Lot at his home. Lot Brough the men inside his home at which time the men of the city surrounded Lot's house. The men cried out to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them." Lot begged the men to not act wickedly against the men (who were angels) and instead offered up his two virgin daughters."I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please."
I have to pause at this point because I always have a very difficult time believing any father would ever willingly hand over his daughters to men looking for sexual gratification. Maybe the real difficulty I have is knowing it was true back then and it is still true to this day.
To finish up the rest of the Sodom and Gomorrah story, the angels cause all the men surrounding the house to go blind. They tell Lot to gather up his family and leave the city because God intended to destroy it. It must be noted none of the family wanted to leave. It must also be noted it specifically says "the Lord was merciful with them." In the end the Lord does destroy the city of Sodom and Gomorrah with sulfur and fire from heaven.
Sin is sin and it has been from the very beginning of time. Sin is what separated Adam and Even from God in the Garden of Eden and sin to this day is still what separates us from Him. My Grandaddy used to say "Thank God for Jesus" and oh how true that is! Because of Jesus we now have the hope of an everlasting life in Heaven as long as we accept Jesus and repent of our sins. Unfortunately, that doesn't remove sin from the world. Being the just Father that He is, God still gives us the choice to turn to him or to turn away from him.
So how are we as Christians to live in a world full of sin and darkness?
How are we as Christians supposed to not only protect ourselves, but also our children?
How are we supposed to stand up to the sinfulness of this world and be a light?
Ephesians 6 lays it all out for us. Y'all ready? Like really ready?
Here's your direction...
Finally be strong in the Lord an in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. (vs 10 and 11)
For our struggle isn't against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. (vs 12)
Here's what to do...
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, stand firm. (vs. 13)
Here is how you do it....
Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and as shoes to your feet, having put-on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of Fatih, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints... (vs 14 - 17)
I'm gonna take just a minute to break it down a bit more for you, should you need it.
1. We are to be strong though the Lord's strength, not in our own.
2. We do that by putting on His armor...
3. So we can stand up agains the devil and his schemes.
4. We do this because we don't fight against what is seen in the flesh.
5. Our fight is against the unseen, ungodly powers.
6. Once again, friends, armor up!
7. When you've done all you can do to stand --- stand firm. (Don't quit! Remember our strength in number 1!)
8. Your armor is made up of
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE
THE WORD OF GOD
This is your guide! The eight listed things above are what you take into your fight. When things gets heated, and they will, when the load feels heavy, and it will, when you are dodging bullets, and uncovering mass amounts of disgusting, paralyzing sinful natures of those of this world... don't feel defeated by the darkness, stand firm. In fact, stand firmer!!
Know where your strength comes from.
Access your armor.
Fight with all that is within you.
